First album after the death of bass player Paul Gray (3) and firing of drummer Joey Jordison. It is known that Jay Weinberg played drums and Alessandro Venturella did the bass for most songs. Corey Taylor, Mick Thomson, James Root and Donnie Steele also played bass on some tracks/parts. The title "The Gray Chapter" refers to the deceased bass player. Recorded at Sunset Sound Studios, Hollywood CA, Sound Factory Recording Studio, Hollywood CA, Westlake Studios, Los Angeles CA, and Jim Root's Garage. Mixed at JHOC, Pasadena CA.
