The action of the opera takes place in Seville at about the middle of the seventeenth century. Don Giovanni (Don Juan) has entered the house of Donna Anna to force her affections. She resists and pursues him as he flees, still incognito. The commotion arouses her father, the Commandant, who appears and challenges Don Giovanni to fight. While Donna Anna goes to find help, Don Giovanni kills her father and then escapes with his servant Leporello. Donna Anna and her betrothed, Don Ottavio, return and find the corpse, and Don Ottavio attempts to console his sweetheart, promising to avenge the deed.
