Liner notes: Boz Scaggs can be counted among the biggest of the rock/soul singers of the 1970's. 1976's song Lowdown reached #3 in the US, and 1977's Lido Shuffle peaked at #11 here in the States. Along with high school classmate Steve Miller, William Royce Scaggs (b. 1944) had a popular Texas band before the two joined forces at the University of Wisconsin. Their R&B band, the Ardells, were a staple of campus life. Later Scaggs joined the Wigs, touring Europe in 1964. By 1967 Scaggs was in California where he cut these recordings for Paul Cursio, then a leading studio engineer and frontman for the Mojo Men. In 1969 Scaggs collaborated with the Steve Miller Band's various album projects before lighting out on his own. The Texan ex-patriots out in California were ruling the scene with a little help from Janis Joplin, the Thirteenth Floor Elevators and the Sir Douglas Quintet. In 1969 Scaggs recorded an album at the legendary Muscle Shoals Studio in Alabama, featuring Loan Me A Dime, which didn't manage to dent the charts. 1976's album SILK DEGREES was Scaggs' tour de force, thus garnering him a spot in music history. His success story continued up to 1980 when he put out MIDDLE MAN and the album reached #8. While these albums did very well here in the US, they also did fairly well in the UK. Nothing more has been heard on this end of Scaggs' career since his 1988 cut Other Roads, which managed to chart in the US top 50. Hopefully this multi-talented soul singer has some irons in the fire and we'll be hearing more from him. - Bo Svensson 1996
