Why is one record cheaper than another?

Some albums were released in multiple versions (pressings). There is the first pressing, which can be very valuable to collectors. When that stock runs out, a new pressing is made, called a repress or re-issue. These are often slightly different, such as a different sleeve or heavier vinyl.

Sometimes older albums are remastered, improving the sound quality. A new pressing is made for this as well. Differences in artwork or small production errors can also make a specific version more attractive.

What makes the difference in price?

For records that are not new, the market value is determined by scarcity and the condition of both the record and the sleeve. Pricing is based on supply and demand, and whether a version is limited or numbered.

Which variant should I choose?

If it’s mainly about the music, a repress is a good choice. An original or numbered edition has a different kind of appeal.

General notes about this release (please note: our version may differ a little. see the comments above):

"Electronically Rechanneled For Stereo" (front jacket); "Electronically Re-Recorded To Simulate Stereo" (rear jacket). The catalogue number RS 3029 appears on the jacket spine and front; RS-3029 is on the jacket rear and labels. Not all copies had the "Not For Sale" sticker.

"All the splendid recordings in this collection have been issued before in Riverside albums. They are assembled here so that these interpretations by gifted artists may be continually available to the public."

Recorded in New York, April 1 and 8, 1957. All tracks here were originally issued in 1958 as [m442238, so this pressing is a REISSUE.

The per-track personnel credits are listed on the rear cover, broken up by Sextet (A1, A2, A4, B1, B3) and Quartet (A3, B2 and B4.) In addition, "A note on instrumentation: Herbie Mann plays flute on [A1, [A3 and {B4; bass clarinet on [A4 only; alto flute on the other four selections. Jack Nimits plays baritone sax on [A1 and [A4; bass clarinet on [A2, B1 and B3."
Of note: On the jacket and label, B1 is attributed to both Tyree Glenn and Duke Ellington. The notes, by Nat Hentoff, say "Tyree Glenn wrote [B1, first recorded by Duke Ellington. The arrangement here is Nat Pierce's."
