Some albums were released in multiple versions (pressings). There is the first pressing, which can be very valuable to collectors. When that stock runs out, a new pressing is made, called a repress or re-issue. These are often slightly different, such as a different sleeve or heavier vinyl.
Sometimes older albums are remastered, improving the sound quality. A new pressing is made for this as well. Differences in artwork or small production errors can also make a specific version more attractive.
What makes the difference in price?
For records that are not new, the market value is determined by scarcity and the condition of both the record and the sleeve. Pricing is based on supply and demand, and whether a version is limited or numbered.
Which variant should I choose?
If it’s mainly about the music, a repress is a good choice. An original or numbered edition has a different kind of appeal.

Stan Getz, Clifford Brown, Ben Webster, Dizzy Gillespie, Johnny Griffin, Phil Woods, Tommy Flanagan, Hank Jones, Sonny Stitt en Wynton Marsalis. Zomaar wat namen uit de bloemrijke jazzhistorie. Nou ja, zomaar…, een hoogstaander rijtje is nauwelijks denkbaar. En het mooiste daarvan is dat de Nederlandse jazzdrummer John Engels, 82 inmiddels, met al deze iconen heeft gespeeld. En dan is dit nog maar een handjevol namen, de lijst van samenwerkingen is veel groter. Het hoogtepunt van zijn carrière noemt hij zelf de concertreeks die hij met Chet Baker maakte in Japan. Met een alerte Baker aan de methadon en tranentrekkend bassist Heijn van de Geijn, wisten ze het jazzpubliek tot absolute ontroering te brengen. Met de fameuze groep Diamond Five maakte hij van 1957 tot 1961 furore in de Amsterdamse jazzclub Sheherazade. Het Fontana album Brilliant!, dat het quintet maakte in 1964, is nu opnieuw uitgebracht. Met louter Nederlandse jazzgrootheden als bandleider en pianist Cees Slinger, tenorsaxofonist Harry Verbeke, meestertrompettist Cees Smal en natuurlijk John Engels zelf, bewijst de groep zich als misschien wel het meest hechte Nederlandse bebop quintet ooit. Een formatie waarvan destijds terecht al gezegd werd dat het niet onderdeed voor de Amerikaanse bebophelden. John Engels himself, Rob van Bavel en Ruud Ouwehand komen op 3 november de re-issue van de plaat live op het podium van Concerto Amsterdam presenteren. Nú al legendarisch!
