What determines the price?

Why is one record cheaper than another?

Some albums were released in multiple versions (pressings). There is the first pressing, which can be very valuable to collectors. When that stock runs out, a new pressing is made, called a repress or re-issue. These are often slightly different, such as a different sleeve or heavier vinyl.

Sometimes older albums are remastered, improving the sound quality. A new pressing is made for this as well. Differences in artwork or small production errors can also make a specific version more attractive.

What makes the difference in price?

For records that are not new, the market value is determined by scarcity and the condition of both the record and the sleeve. Pricing is based on supply and demand, and whether a version is limited or numbered.

Which variant should I choose?

If it’s mainly about the music, a repress is a good choice. An original or numbered edition has a different kind of appeal.

Sleeve notes by Henk Hofstede are presented on the back cover in French, English, German and Dutch:
From December 1984 till April 1985 the Museum of Modern Art* in Amsterdam presented the exhibition "La Grande Parade". Taking its name from a painting by Fernand Léger it offered a panoramic view of post-1940 painting with artists like Miró, Picasso, Bacon, Rothko, Léger and Beckmann. Amazed at the magnificance of these works of art, I started thinking about organising a project similar to Mussorgsky's "Pictures from an Exhibition": music inspired by paintings. In this case pop music in the broadest sense.
I invited composers and musicians that I admire to write a song each based on their favourite painting of "La Grande Parade". They were granted almost completely freedom: theirs was the choice of musicians, styles and sounds they wanted to use. There was however one restriction: each artist was given one day only to record this song in the studio.
Within this strict frame composers and musicians have succeeded in creating eleven totally different pieces of music, whilst often leaving their usual musical backgrounds. Al of the artists involved in this project contributed new material written especially for this album based on a general theme.
It is the aim of Werf Records to produce one such album a year with a thematic approach, using different musicians and composers. This is the first one... about painting and music.
